Toe bruise: If you don't recall injuring the toe then it is hard to say that it is a bruise especially since you now describe it as expanding. You will need to have a doctor take a look at it for further guidance. Take care.

Curious.: What does "been there a while" mean in terms of time. Bruises generally don't last a long while and disappear in a short while. They are generally brought on by an injury of varying degrees of pressure. There may be something else that is discoloring the skin and it might be prudent to have your toe examined.
