When we let our: guard down and relax we can panic and go on "high alert." This is called "release phenomenon" and can occur when someone is meditating, experiencing clinical hypnosis, guided imagery, etc. See your doc to rule out anything medical and then then use "self talk" to remind yourself that it is ok to relax and sleep as you are drifting off.
