Medication: if you have known esophagitis and a hiatal hernia then likely you are already are on a medication like Protonix or Nexium (esomeprazole). If not, this kind of medication, known as a proton pump inhibitor, can be helpful. Eating more slowly and smaller, more frequent meals may help the burping after eating. If symptoms can be controlled with medication many times surgery for the hiatal hernia is not necessary
