24 hour : After you wake up and pass the first urine in the bathroom the rest go into the jug for the next 24 hours. For patients at home this is the best way to do it. In a hospital setting can be done at anytime. So proceed with your RN instructions. They both are right but at home is easy to do it the RN way.

I think you: could start your 24 hour collection at any time, but if you complete it late in the day, you will not be able to take to the lab til next day anyway. It is probably easiest to start first thing in the morning.
