Ankle instability: Repetitive ankle sprains are the result of chronic trauma to the the ankle stabilizing ligaments (usually on the outside of the ankle) called the anterior talofibular ligaments. Over time, the ligaments stretch out due to recurrent trauma and then no longer provide adequate stability for the ankle. This sometimes needs to be addressed surgically and should be evaluated by an Orthopaedic surgeon.
