A member asked:

I have osteopenia in lumbar spine. been having low back discomfort and an odd tingly feeling at times. is it from the osteopenia?

No: Osteopenia simply means low bone density. This does not cause back pain, but does increase the probability of having a fracture. However, at your age, the only treatment would be to make sure you are getting enough calcium, vit d, and exercise.

Osteopenia: No. Osteopenia/osteoporosis are painless. Unless, of course, there is a fracture that occurs. Based upon your age, back pain is likely muscular unless there are sensations down the leg. Muscular back pain is treated nonsurgically with nsaid's, ice/heat, salonpas hot patches, and pilates/yoga/piyo. If round 1 doesn't work, you'll need a doctor's rx for mckenzie pt and/or any studies performed.
