1 of many causes: We have 24 ribs with 24 joints to vertebrae in back and 20 to cartilage connected to the sternum in front. Ribs 11 and 12 "float" in front. As kids we use these joints and can twist like snakes. As adults, these joints permanently fuse but at first we often re-articulate these joints with sudden moves causing a sharp pain that usually lasts until the joint re-fuses which takes up to 6 weeks.
