Not always,: depending on symptoms, measurement of lung function, and need for various medications and Oxygen. Basically, one can divide the degrees of severity from mild, moderate to severe and finally end-stage. Good question.

Yes: It can be very serious. Pulmonary function tests will be able to tell you how severe it is. Also, COPD puts you at higher risk for things like pneumonia and pulmonary hypertension. If you have COPD, you should make sure you see your pulmonologist regularly.
