A member asked:

What are the possible causes when the total biliruben is elevated but the direct biliruben is normal?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Direct bilirubin: Measures conjugated bilirubin. The rest is indirect, or unconjugated, bilirubin. Causes of elevated indirect bilirubin is usually viral hepatitis. Other less common causes are hemolysis sickle cell anemia, liver toxins, and terminal liver failure. It means that liver cells are not working well. Time to see the doctor.
