Supportive Care : You are probably right, at this age, we want to be very careful about cold medicines as they cause mostly side effects with no benefit. If he seems to be in pain with his sore throat, try a dose of ibuprofen this should soothe it for 6 to 8 hours. If he is inconsolable and one hour after trying Motrin you are not seeing him perk up and give you a smile, then he needs to be seen by his doc.
