Unusual: If the area is a vein(hard to say without exam), it would be somewhat unusual. An inflammation of the vein is called superficial thrombophlebitis. If it is this then taking an NSAID usually will speed resolution. However, for an accurate diagnosis you would have to see your physician while the area was swollen and painful. I hope that helps
