Broad question: There are many psychiatric medications and may psychiatric disorders, some psychiatric disorders are chronic while others episodic, and other conditions such as panic and anxiety disorders can be treated with cognitive-behavior therapies and allow for reduced need ot discontinuation of meds. For individuals with a single episode of depression, many have full recovery and no recurrence. Depends.

As above : Is not unusual that patients with serious mental health condition to have poor insight (not believing they r sick) and poor judgement not believe they need medication . Therefore , it is better to ask u prescriber about what u need to do.
