OH my aching toe!: You have provided a pretty good description of the distal phalanx and distal interphalangeal joint of the second toe. Often times this toe is a bit longer than the others. It is because of the extra length that this toe can be bumped or jammed more readily. Some times this type of injury is not felt initially, but is noticed some time after the fact. Often, Motrin and protecting the toe help.

If its at the joint: This could be from a shoe rubbing. It's always possible it is a form of arthritis this is why best to see a doctor (lie foot doc) for you to be evaluated appropriately.
