A member asked:

I am doing colonoscopy prep( suprep). is it ok for me to take my probitoics after i am done with the cleanse? will it mess up the test at all? i also am on low dose augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) so need the probiotics.

Sorry, but no...: The goal of suprep, or any colonoscopy prep for that matter, is to cleanse entirely--leaving behind no stool, no bacteria, no debris. Taking probiotics therefore defeats the purpose of the prep. Beside, unless you are taking a non-bacterial probiotic (like florastor), your probiotics are likely being killed by the augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate).

It's ok: The probiotics deliver "good" bugs into your GI tract and should disappear before they reach your colon, which is obviously what the colonoscopy will look at. Minimize the water you take them with if it's close to the time of your colonoscopy, as a stomach full of fluid may interfere with the sedation for your procedure.
