If there is a cross- reactivity during an elisa test is it possible to end up with a false negative as a result?

False positives: Cross-reactivity can cause false positives (meaning that the test is positive but the actual substance tested for isn't there). The happens when an antigen (virus, protein or bacterium) is so similar structurally that it reacts with the same antibody that the test is designed for. For example, the antibody test for latex allergy can sometimes cross react with a protein in bananas! Crazy, huh?
