Insulin resistance: High levels of the reproductive hormone LH and insulin are @ the root of PCOS. These two hormones work together to stimulate the growth of the ovaries, the formation of ovarian cysts and the production of male hormones (androgens). Basic work up includes pelvic ultrasound, hormone levels (LH, insulin, androgens) & a glucose tolerance test. There's a strong genetic component to PCOS. Whew!

Exact cause unknown: The cause of PCOS is unknown but considerable evidence suggests that PCOS is the result of one of a number of intrinsic ovarian genetic traits that interact with one or more other congenital or environmental factors to cause dysregulation of steroidogenesis. Risk factors include: maternal PCOS, parental obesity, treatment with valproic acid(Depakene) and Endocrine disruptors like bisphenol A (BPA)
