Need more info: A port is typically removed if the Cancer is under full control(Cancer free). if there is some doubt that you may need to reuse the port soon, then it is best left inside for 3-6 months. But if you have bad skin reaction near the port, your doctor can easily remove the port , knowing that you may need another surgery to put the port back in case your cancer requires further treatment in future

Keep port: The port should be kept for chemo use. When removed the subclavian vein an frequently thronbose and another port if needed can not be placed but the other chest wall has to be used. Port even when not accessed should be periodically flushed with heparin and possible antibiotics if there is a question of INF. Steroids can be injected around port for nerve pain control.
