See surgeon last: It is almost always preferable to see a non-surgeon, such as a neurologist before seeing an orthopedic or neurosurgeon. At Mayo Clinic, no sees a surgeon of any sub specialty before seeing a surgeon. This is the best way to get the most accurate diagnosis and least likely to have unnecessary surgery.

Either answer good: A physiatrist makes the most sense first. Either provider would be good though. So many people improve with PT, that was a good place to start, now more evaluation is needed.

See pain management: Can be caused by nerve being sandwiched between two spinal bones, pressed by a bulging disc. It can cause muscle spasm and back pain and burning pain. This condition must be professionally managed. See an interventional pain management specialist for definitive diagnosis and management.
