Reflux: Gastro esophageal reflux disease, gerd, is also known as acid reflux. It is a phenomenon whereby, through a number of mechanisms, the contents of the stomach back up into the esophagus, a process known as reflux. The term acid reflux is not entirely correct as other stomach contents may reflux back up including bile and digestive enzymes, both of which may also damage the esophagus and cause pain.
