Medications: Trial ranitidine 150mg twice daily or if that is ineffective use Omeprazole 20mg daily. You can also work on reduced alcohol and smoking, weight loss, eating less, less liquid with meals, elevating the head of the bed, waiting longer before lying down after eating, etc.

GERD treatments: There are a variety of good treatments for acid reflux. You can start by smaller portion sizes, not eating late at night, elevating your head while sleeping, loosing weight, and avoiding caffeine/chocolate. If those maneuvers don't work, and reflux severe, you should start a acid reducing medication under physician supervision. If heartburn continues despite maximal medicines, consider surgery.
