Pneumonia: Pneumonia occurs when pathogens infect the spaces where you breathe, your trachea or windpipe expands into a big network of airspaces where oxygen is brought into close contact with blood. When our immune system experiences a breach, these organisms can grow and enter the bloodstream in addition to interfering with gas exchange. Pathogens in the bloodstream then sail to and attack anywhere.
