Depends on the cause: Spread of pneumonia causing organisms (be it a bacteria or virus) depends on the type of bug & immune status of the infected person. Severe infection with an invasive organism in a normal person or if it occurs in a person whose immune system is weak (due to medications, cancer, transplant, hiv, primary immune disorders etc.) then there is a higher chance of spread to bloodstream, causing sepsis.
