Cannot diagnose: Without being able to see and examine this lesion it is impossible to tell you what is going on. If you are dissatisfied with your doctor's opinion a second opinion never hurts.

Several causes: Chronic sores on the scalp can be due to a variety of causes. Shingles can occur on the scalp, but wouldn't last for 5 yrs. Shingles often start as painful red bumps which then scab over, then eventually the scab falls off. Skin cancer (basal cell) can also appear the same way, but the skin never heals. Lupus can also cause scabbed lesions on the scalp that never heal, and need meds for life.
