How to take care of the wound after a sebaceous cyst surgery?

Follow doctors rec: There are different ways to treat the wound left after removal of a sebaceous cyst. Recommendations are dependent on how and if the wound was closed. I would follow the advice of the doctor who treated the cyst for you. This doc is in the best position to know.

Surgical wound: Your surgeon should be giving you very clear instructions on the care of this wound.

Wound Care: Assuming the cyst was removed and the skin was sutured closed, i would recommend twice daily cleansing, and application of a topical antibiotic ointment. A bandage is helpful for areas that are exposed or rub on clothing.

Simple Care: The real question is what not to do that slows down healing. Avoid using alcohol, peroxide, hibiclens, betadine, and bleach solutions. Inflammation ( red, hot, swollen, tender) is important to healing so anti-inflammatories (motrin, advil) are bad. Cover the area with a clean dressing changed every other day and protected from trauma. Antibiotics do not help healing unless it is truly infected.
