A member asked:

Do u believe the color of phlegm in the morning is best way to tell if you sick or not? cough on/off during day. white to brown. i smoke. stuffy nose

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not generally: Color of phlegm can change to green or yellow in the absence of bacterial infection, and brown is generally just associated with the continued smoking. It sounds like you have chronic bronchitis, and continued smoking is going to cause more harm, including emphysema/COPD. You need to stop. Please talk to your doctor about ways to help you quit smoking and improve your cough and your health.
