Encourage your: Friend to start with a medical evaluation by a physician. A doctor can not only assess for a mood disorder but can also check for underlying medical conditions that may be the cause of depressive symptoms. Talking therapy (such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or insight oriented psychotherapy) is extremely important for lasting change.

Yes ask her to: see an counselor/psychologist to talk over her issues so she can get rid of the depression as you put it. It is very common to seek help for both men and women and both have had to seek help for at least once their life to manage problems. Good luck. Psychiatrists are great for prescribing medicine to help depression, anxiety and other disorders.
