Wait: The most likely cause is unrecognized trauma. Be sure your shoes are comfortable and large enough. Change shoes for a few days. Keep your foot elevated as much as possible when you're resting. Advil or Aleve (naproxen) may provide some relief.

?injury: Is this injury or irritation or inflammation? Injury from ill fitting shoes, inflammation of the joint such as gout or other types of arthritis are possibilities. Even if trauma caused a fracture of the big toe,there is no specific treatment other than taping it to the next toe. Avoid stressing the toe,wear looser shoes and unless morepain,swelling and redness develop,I'd hold off on seeing an MD
