Subungual hematoma: When painful, a portion of the nail should be removed under local anesthesia. This should help.

Treat swelling: With ice and antiinflammatory. If the toe is swollen and painful, likely a surgical shoe wold be helpful as when there is pressure on the toe when a person propulses to walk this will hurt. X-rays may not always show a fracture the first time. I.E stress fractures show up sometime later. But, even if you did not fracture it a contusion at times can hurt just as bad.
