Muscle strains: ..and bone fractures both may have variable amounts of swelling and pain. A muscle stain will generally be more painful when tensing the muscle, and will be stiff and sore when you stretch it. A bony stress fracture may not cause much visible swelling, but it will usually hurt when you press on the bone at the site of the fracture, or when bearing weight. Sprained tendons and ligaments also hurt!
