MRI: Sprained ankle pain can linger after immobilization and medications have stopped. An MRI is indicated to determine damage done to the ligaments. X-rays would not show this unless the joints stabilized by these ligaments were dislocated. If there is ligament damage, surgical intervention would be required.

See below: May need an MRI to see if there was more damage than thought. Ankle brace may be needed depending on how much pain and ligament laxity there is
