Sealants: Fill the grooves on the chewing surfaces of the premolars and molars, preventing decay on these surfaces. Sealants do not prevent decay on smooth surfaces of teeth, so proper brushing AND flossing, avoiding high sugar/starch snacks, and regular Dental Care are all imperative. Sealants most effective for children during the "cavity prone years".

Think narrow gaps: Sealants for teeth is very similar to caulking for counters and windows at home. The purpose is to block out junk and keep bad stuff from getting into seams and crevices where you cannot clean well. Sealants can help certain areas of certain teeth from getting cavities, and other doctors here have provided those answers. Thanks!
