Xantomas: xanthomas are a marker o familial hyperlipidemia..this places you at significant risk for future cardiovascular events and based on your LDL cholesterol number you should be on long standing statin therapy..unfortunately statin use is contraindicated in women of childbearing age and considered unsafe for use during pregnancy..if you are considering more children you need alternate therapy

Not that we know: Currently HDL recommendations highlight a minimum number that we like patients to achieve. This numbers by age and sex. There is currently no maximum HDL number, that above which there are associated detrimental effects. Therefore, the current thinking is that the higher the HDL number the better. This number is subject to significant genetic predisposition but can be lowered by diet, smoking, etc.

Very indirectly: If it raises triglycerides, then it might lower HDL cholesterol a little but i don't think it's a significant effect.

How do you naturally increase the HDL or good cholesterol?

Diet & exercise: Moderate exercise (about 30 minutes five times a week) reduces LDL cholesterol and raises HDL cholesterol. Smoking can lower HDL levels, so stop smoking if you do. Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean sources of protein. Include monounsaturated fats in your diet- olive oil/canola oil. Moderate consumption of alcohol may also positively impact HDL levels. 1 glass of wine.
