A member asked:

Could you explain the surgical treatment for a "collapsed" (retracted) eardrum, please?

Dr. Jack Anon answered

Depends.......: The usual first step for treating a retracted eardrum is placement of an "ear tube". This can frequently allow the air pressure of the ear to return to normal. If the problem is too severe, then a more formal operation to fix and support the eardrum could be done. An ear tube may still be required. There are some centers that are doing a balloon procedure on the eustachian tube.
