5 year old : Your 5 year old daughter who will not allow your dentist look in her mouth sounds fearful and uncomfortable. Some suggestions include: making several brief desensitizing visits to the dentist's office to pick out prizes as an example, read age appropriate books about dental visits, visit pediatric dental offices which are usually outfitted with kid friendly decor.

Dentist: First have her go to the dentist with you show she sees what is done. The first visit for a child is usually pretty easy-ride up and down in the chair, counting the teeth, and then a cleaning. You should also see if there is a pediatric dentist in your area-they are usually better equipped to deal with small frightened children.

What caused: her to be scared? Was it learned from you, her father, siblings, friends, neighbors, grandparents, TV? With a parent's proper guidance and training, use of children's books on going to the dentist this anxiety can be mitigated or eliminated. I recommend seeing a children's dentist (Pedodontist) and discussing this with them prior to the child's visit. Do not delay.
