A member asked:

Why aren't the proteins we eat denatured in the acidic stomach? how are enzymes able to connect to the proteins, low stomach ph doesnt denature them?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Thoughtful question!: Enzymatic digestion occurs predominantly in the small bowel due to the action of "pancreatic juice" which contains many enzymes, including trypsinogen, chymotrypsinogen, elastase, carboxypeptidase, pancreatic lipase, nucleases & amylase. The pancreas also expresses bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) to neutralize stomach acid, thereby promoting enzymatic action.
