Swollen gums: Hi tangela, swollen gums could be the first sign of tooth decay. You will notice the teeth separating not because the teeth are loose, but because periodontal disease may be taking place causing the gum line to reseed. This is a bad thing! Any gum inflammation should be evaluated by a dentist to assess if there is a potential abscess, tooth decay, or gingivitis taking place. Hope this helps!

Periodontitis ?: Needs to be examined by a dentist. Periodontal disease is often painless. Treat your problem now to avoid losing your teeth.

Gum disease: Sounds like you may have both swelling and recession. Best advice, see a gum/bone specialist now. See a Periodontist. The longer you wait, the more the disease will progress.
