Fetal distress: Fetal distress is a vague term Obgyns use to describe a fetus that is in imminent jeopardy. Typically when that term is used a c section is done. A fetal demise is the term used for when a baby dies prior to delivery. In some cases the mother may have pain or symptoms (such as during a placental abruption). In other cases such as a cord accident there are no signs at all
