It's : It's possible that your misunderstood your physician in your visit today. It's possible, and rather common, for babies to be born with heart murmurs and connections ("holes") in their hearts that allow blood to pass from one side to the other. A fetus certainly needs a heart to survive in the womb. When you go to your ob/gyn, do they listen to the heart sounds and let you hear them?

Talk to MD: A fetus cannot survive without a heart, but that is not your problem. The doctor is describing a condition where there is a hole in the heart. This can be several things, and so you need to have along talk with your doctor about what this means for your baby. Good luck.

Miscommunication: Babies are born with a heart murmur all the time & grow up to be successful adults. What your doc likely meant is they are not as dependent on their heart in the womb because the mother is doing some of the hearts work. The stress on the heart increases at birth when it must do all the work. You can't hear a heart murmur on a baby until it is born (although you can suspect it will have one)
