Parathyroid surgery: Nephrologists do not do parathyroid glands, surgeons do. Ask to be referred to one if you need to have one of your parathyroid glands removed. Good luck.

Treatment options: Nephrologists commonly diagnose parathyroid hormone (PTH) elevation. This is commonly due to chronic kidney disease and can be managed with special forms of vitamin d. Pth adenomas, or tumors are different and can be managed with sensipar ( a daily oral medication) or may require surgery by an ENT or head and neck surgeon.

No: Nephrologists will not do neck surgery - parathyroid surgery; a gland surgeon should do that - who is experienced.

Nephrologist: NO! Nephrologist are kidney doctors, not surgeons. I would recommend a surgeon who has extensive parathyroid surgery experience, especially with multiple gland disease. They may be called head and neck surgeons or endocrine surgeons.
