Sydnesmosis: The syndesmosis of the Tibia and Fibula is necessary to be in tact for stability of the ankle joint. If you are considering syndesmotic repair, you should have radiographic or MRI evidence of the instability and 'spreading' of the ankle joint under stress-they can actually perform stress radiographs. If you do have such a repair, ask for a repair in which the hardware does not require removal
