Depends: Our 5 year data in our practice with the lap band is about 35% loss of excess body weight. Our gastric bypass patients maintain about 65% of their excess body weight loss at 5 years on average. We are doing less bands now and more bypass and sleeve gastrectomies due to disappointing results.

Slower wt loss: Of the 3 bariatric surgeries performed commonly in the US, lap band is the least effective. Both gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy have better results. Of the three operations it has the lowest complication and death rate, the tradeoff, the least average wt loss. Some people have great success with the band, but more than either the gastric bypass or sleeve it requires followup and adjustment.

Depends: The band is dependent on two things: first your willingness to change lifestyle. Same as all operations. Second your surgeon willing to adjust as needed. Recent study shows loss of over half the excess weight at one year.
