Muscle or nerve: This could be an inflamed muscle or pinched/irritated nerve. If there has been no strain or injury,I recommend applying intermittent moist heat and,if you can take them,NSAIDS like ibuprofen or Aleve (naproxen). If there is worsening of pain on turning the neck, wear a soft cervical collar. See your Physician if symptoms worsen or persist and xrays May be ordered to look for arthritis or neck spurs.

Muscle spasm: Sounds like muscle spasm. I suggest otc nsaids and heat. If it persists your pcp can prescribe a muscle relaxer.
