Mood vs Disorder: Depressed mood is a normal emotion that we all experience from time to time.. Clinical depression (lasting at least 2 weeks and showing impairment in a number of areas) is a mental illness.

Wow...: Many in the field are uncomfortable with the way society (and the pharmaceutical industry) has come to define emotional suffering in medical terms, as "illness." it may be a completely understandable ; appropriate response. In some cases, it may make sense to think in terms of illness. It depends. Either way, most people with depressive symptoms can benefit from psychotherapy ; self-understanding.
