Had to look this up: We see kids with immunodeficiencies, so frequent middle ear infections. A treatment for this is ear tube placement by ENT, which CREATES perforated ear drum so that infections clears rapidly. An indication for the patching (various procedures but seems generally straight-forward) is frequent infections, but seems to usually be reserved for swimmers. I think patching or watchful waiting is ok.
