Renal biopsy: The one key test to determine the severity of involvement and the appropriate treatment is a kidney biopsy. Blood test needed include a creatinine clearance, complement levels and a urinalysis.

Urine, blood: You mainly need a microscopic urinalysis, looking for red blood cells, casts and protein. Also blood test called creatinine will tell how well the kidneys are functioning.

Urine & kidney: First you need to have abnormal findings in the urine. If other causes such as an urinary tract infection can be ruled out one would focus on the kidney and order test for complement consumption, kidney function etc. The ultimate test is finding immune changes in a kidney biopsy but this is not usually employed. Talk to your nephrologist or rheumatologist for more specifics.
