Need both: Teenagers need at least1200 mg of calcium/d, which is equivalent to 4 dairy servings or a combination of dairy and supplemental pills. If you do not get an average of 30 minutes of sun exposure daily, you should also supplement Vitamin D, as 70% of people in the northern US states have been found to be deficient. Vit D is needed for bones to use calcium. Whole grains are in breads, cereals, etc
