Hernia: The swelling in the groin can be an inguinal hernia, and the pain may increase with any movement or any heavy lifting or bending. Hernia can become very painful suddenly as the intestinal wall gets 'trapped", and that should be evaluated immediately. Avoiding heavy lifting may prevent this. Hernias typically are repaired surgically.
