Spotting: Could be variation . Sometimes when I do PAP smear I see blood when the period is not due for several days.It could though be implantation bleeding if you do not use birth control so would check HCG in 1 week if your period does not come blood is more sensitive then urine. Would also consider vaginitis or UTI in the apporpriate setting. F/U with doc/urgent care if no period or if pain

Not unusual: It is not unusual for periods to start a bit early on occasion. This can happen due to hormonal changes, stress or other changes in the body. If you are sure you are not pregnant then don't worry and your periods should straighten out in the next month or so
