Fever in an adult:: Fever to 99-100 F and chills is often due to the common cold. Persistent shaking chills may indicate a more serious infection.Fever to 101 or higher may indicate influenza or another infection(pneumonia, urinary tract infection, strep throat, sinusitis or otitis media) and should prompt a call or visit to your physician. OTC acetaminophen or ibuprofen/naproxen can be given to reduce fever.
