Fungal vs bacterial : Infections either fungal and/or bacterial can cause this type of events and some autoimmune reactions as well. A scraping and/or biopsy of the area can be performed by dermatology or a primary care doctor. Trust your gut feeling and seek out a second and maybe a third opinion if you do not feel comfortable with your current diagnosis and treatment plan.
